FREE CUTTING PLANNING GUIDE

Free cut list optimizer for workshop jobs

A reliable cut list links every required part to a specific length of raw stock. Rather than simply totaling meters, MetalCut attempts to place the individual pieces, tracks blade loss and flags parts that remain unassigned.

01 / WHEN TO USE IT

What this calculation covers

This helps with small fabrication batches, repeat-order preparation and comparing alternative stock lengths. Export a CSV to share part assignments, or use your browser’s print dialog to save the cutting layout as a PDF.

Important limitation

MetalCut does not validate engineering drawings, tolerances, grain or orientation, weld preparation, or material purchasing requirements.

02 / WORKED EXAMPLE

A real-number cut list example

STOCK LENGTH6000 mm
FINISHED PARTS5700 mm
SAW KERF9 mm
LEFTOVER291 mm

One 6,000 mm bar can hold 2,400, 1,800 and 1,500 mm pieces in this example. Their finished lengths total 5,700 mm. With 9 mm of estimated saw kerf, the nominal remaining length is 291 mm.

Length balance: 5700 mm finished + 9 mm kerf + 291 mm leftover = 6000 mm stock.

This illustrative example assumes zero head trim and tail reserve. Always enter your actual machine allowances.

03 / PRACTICAL WORKFLOW

How to prepare a cutting plan

  1. Identify parts

Use short stable part IDs so the layout is easy to compare with the job drawing.

  2. Enter finished dimensions

Input the required final part lengths; the saw kerf is a separate setting.

  3. Export and verify

Check every part ID and quantity in the result before producing a shop cut list.

04 / FAQ

Common questions

Can I export the result?

Yes. Export CSV or choose Print / PDF to save using your browser.

What if some parts are unplaced?

The result is incomplete. Add stock or revise the job; do not treat it as a finished production cut list.
